Something similar

Not everyone knows this.
But maybe you do.

Maybe you’ve seen it—just once—out of the corner of your eye.
Something glowing. Something floating.
Something small and quick, zipping through the sky like a firefly with somewhere important to be.

That, my friend, is a wish.

Yes, really.

Wishes are real.
They don’t look the way you’d expect—no coins in fountains, no magic wands.
Real wishes are born from hope and wonder. And when the world is quiet—truly quiet—they take flight.

Leo didn’t know this. Not yet.

But on Tuesday night, as he brushed his teeth and pulled on his pajamas, he felt a strange flutter in his chest. Not a bad flutter.
Just a curious one.

He padded across the carpet, peeked out the window. A sky full of stars stared back.

Then Leo did what he always did before bed:
He climbed under the covers, pulled them tight to his chin, closed his eyes…
and made a wish.

He didn’t whisper it. He didn’t write it down.
He just thought it, deep in his chest.

“I wish I could fly. Not forever. Just once. Not like a bird. Like a dream.”

He didn’t expect anything to happen.

But something did.

As Leo fell asleep, something soft and golden rose from his heart—lighter than breath, warmer than moonlight.

It looked like a glowing speck of dust at first. Then a tiny spark. Then a creature made of light—part bird, part fire, part idea.

The wish fluttered gently, shook itself awake, and zipped toward the open window.

The latch unhooked itself.

The wish slipped out into the night.

Outside, dozens—hundreds—of other wishes were floating through the sky. Some were bold and red, streaking like comets. Others were blue and sleepy, swaying on breezes like lanterns in the wind.

There were silly wishes:

“I wish I had a sandwich made of marshmallows!”
“I wish dogs could talk!”
“I wish the moon was made of glitter!”

And quiet wishes:

“I wish tomorrow is easier.”
“I hope someone listens to me.”
“Please let me be brave.”

Each one shimmered and glowed.
Each one was real.

And all of them were heading toward the tallest cloud in the sky—the one shaped like a curled hand.
That’s where the Wishkeeper waits.

The Wishkeeper is very old. Some say they are made of mist and starlight. Some say they have feathers. Some say they wear a cloak made of all the wishes ever made.

No one knows for sure.

But this much is true:
The Wishkeeper listens. Watches. Waits.
Then gently chooses: Which wish will come true tonight?

Leo’s wish floated to the front of the line. It trembled a little—it wasn’t the loudest or the brightest. But it had something special.

It was clear.
It was kind.
It sparkled with joy.

The Wishkeeper smiled.
And nodded.

Back in Leo’s room, the wish dove down again, through the open window, into the sleeping boy’s chest.

Leo’s fingers twitched. His toes lifted.
He didn’t wake.

But suddenly…

Leo rose.

His covers slipped away. His feet hovered above the mattress. He drifted—slowly, softly, glowing with the golden light of his wish.

He didn’t fly like a superhero.
He didn’t zoom through the clouds.
He floated—like a dream held gently in the air.

And just for a moment…
he felt what it was like to be free.

When morning came, Leo awoke to sunshine on his pillow. The window was closed again. His covers were a little crooked. And his hair stuck out sideways like it had been blown by a breeze.

He sat up and smiled.

He didn’t say anything to anyone—not about the light, not about the sky, not even about flying.

But all day, Leo felt lighter.
He hummed more than usual.
He even skipped down the sidewalk like someone with a very good secret.

Because he had one.

Leo knew something now.

He knew that wishes fly.

And sometimes—just sometimes—
they come true.
